VIENNAGEDDON 2026
VIENNAGEDDON 2026
Austrian Old School and Premodern Championships
May 2026
This recap covers VIENNAGEDDON 2026 as Vienna’s biggest retro Magic weekend yet—three days of Old School, Premodern, and Retro Limited, capped by two Austrian Championships and packed side events.
This article focuses on:
- Scale, dates, and structure. Held May 29–31, 2026, with a Friday community warm-up (Retro Limited), Saturday Austrian Old School Championship, and Sunday Austrian Premodern Championship—plus multiple side events across the weekend.
- Attendance and venues. The event hit record interest (tickets sold out fast), drawing 65 Old School, 97 Premodern, 38 Retro Limited players, and a 61-player Premodern side event at the Three for One Trading store, with main days hosted at VinziRast Mittendrin.
- Community experience and special guests. The weekend leaned hard into “old cardboard” vibes—meetups, drinks, a custom Magic menu, and prominent guests including artist Paolo Parente, streamer Timmy the Sorcerer, plus expanded Premodern coverage and on-site judging support.
- Prizes and incentives. Both main events had deep prize pools (Old School prizes + special awards like Best Unpowered and Most Creative Deck; Premodern prizes scaling up to high-end staples) and Premodern also served as a qualifier for the European Premodern Masters.
- Results and highlights. The recap lists Top 8 archetypes, celebrates winners (Jiri Cihak for Old School; Radim Franta for Austrian Premodern), and includes side-event winners plus plenty of photos and decklist pointers to capture the weekend’s metagame snapshot.
From May 29 to May 31, 2026, the Lions of Austria organized their annual Old School and Premodern tournament, the VIENNAGEDDON! The tournaments were coined as Austrian Championships this year, and the Austrian Premodern Championship was also a qualifier for the European Premodern Masters! Tickets for the VIENNAGEDDON were sold in record time. The Premodern Championship was sold out within 1-2 days.

What is the VIENNAGEDDON?
This has been the seventh time the VIENNAGEDDON was organized by the Lions of Austria and it has been the biggest retro card event ever in Vienna! With a total of 65 Old School players and 97 Premodern players as well as 38 Limited players during the Community Event and 61 players for the Premodern side event, which were both held at our Three for One Trading store. That means there were a total of 261 players this year!
So, what actually happened at this year’s VIENNAGEDDON?

Pretty much the same as last year!
Two main tournaments were planned: Old School (Ravenna) on Saturday and Premodern on Sunday. Both tournaments have been given the status of Austrian Championships. For Premodern, there was also a very well-organized Side Event at the Three for One Trading store, and for Old School, there was a very “hush-hush” chaotic Old School tournament “planned”. Nobody knows what happened there! (Okay, maybe I have some info for you ;)
On Friday before the Championships, we played Retro Limited Events! Fallen Empires, Ice Age, Odyssey, and Urza were planned, but not everything was played.
THE SCHEDULE
Friday, 29th May 2026 – Community Event with Retro Limited Events
Saturday, 30th May 2026 – Austrian Old School Championship and Premodern Side Event
Sunday, 31th May 2026 – Austrian Premodern Championship + Old School Side “Event”
Friday – Community Get-Together
On Friday, May 29th 2026, we met at the Three for One Trading store for the warm-up, community event and get-together! The plan was simple:
Get together, talk about old cardboard, drink some beers, meet Paolo Parente, play some retro games and have fun!
To be fair, it was pretty similar to last year, but we switched it up a bit: For the very adventurous players, we added an Urzas Block Draft! Now that one is super pricey, but when do you ever get the chance to draft this again?! The following Limited Events were available once enough people wanted to join:
Drafts
15:00 Fallen Empires (6 Packs) – €50
15:00 Ice Age Block (IA, ALL, CSP) – €90
19:00 Fallen Empires (6 Packs) – €50
19:30 Urzas Block (USG, ULG, UDS) – €400
Sealed
15:00 Odyssey Block (Starter ODY, Booster Torment, Booster Judgment) – €135
On Saturday and Sunday, we met at Vinzirast Mittendrin, for the main tournaments, but we ALSO met at Three for One Trading store for the Premodern Side Event. The location was an easy pick after last year’s success! Not a lot has changed, and to quote last year:
Vinzirast Mittendrin was a really great location for the event, because they had soooo much space! We could meet at the rooftop terrace which had a covered area for around 70-80 people, which was perfect for the main event. Then there was the first floor, which could seat around 30 people. This is where we could hold our side events as well as set up THE artist and our 341 booth!
Except this time, both floors got used for the main events, the big Championships! The Premodern Side Event was moved to the Three for One Trading store, where we had enough space for a huge Side Event with 61 players!
Kathy, the wonderful wife of Rolf, organised and crafted a beautiful “Magic Menu” with a lot of cool options, including different Magic-themed Cocktails and Mocktails as well as three different dishes to choose from! Of course, we also had a Magic beer price to go along with our games.
Check out the full menu:

Just like last year, we want to paraphrasing/copying this info from the Vinzirast website, to also emphasize the social project that the Lions of Austria supported by picking this wonderful spot in Vienna for their tournament:
Vinzirast Mittendrin is an innovative social housing project that opened in May 2013. It is a place where formerly homeless people and students live, work and learn together here. Some of the residents find employment in the kitchen or in service, an opportunity to re-enter working life. Here they work together with full-time and volunteer colleagues.
Special Guests and Others
So many awesome people joined the VIENNAGEDDON 2026 this year, but some people stood out more than others! We had some celebrities among our midst, and they deserve some spotlight for themselves; otherwise, they’ll wither like the beautiful flowers that they are.
So let’s shine a light on our stars!
The charming and talented artist Paolo Parente visited us almost the entire weekend! He is the person behind the artwork of Masticore, Misdirection, Armadillo Cloak, Call of the Wild, Fling, Godo, Bandit Warlord and over 150 more Magic cards!
Paolo was an amazing guest, with a lot of patience. He drew alters, signed cards, took pictures with us, and joked around with everyone! He always knew exactly which signature color would look the best on your cards.
We are very happy that the Lions of Austria contacted Paolo Parente to join this year’s VIENNAGEDDON. Thank you, Paolo, for joining the party and being such a wonderful guest at our event!
Do we even have to mention this regular VIENNAGEDDON guest and superstar anymore?
Of course we do, because he’s awesome! Thomas visited the VIENNAGEDDON first in 2024 and since then has never stopped showing up. He streams our VIENNAGEDDON on his YouTube channel, and we wouldn’t know how to do it without him. Okay, maybe we would, but the show would never be as good as his!
This time, Timmy went full on stream and didn’t play like in 2025. His brother Joep, however, was there to represent both of them in the tournament.
Thanks again for supporting us and being a big part of the VIENNAGEDDON, Timmy!
The stream is already on Timmy’s Youtube channel and check it out:

More InformationStreaming Done Right
So far, the VIENNAGEDDON didn’t have live coverage of the Premodern games… until now! The wonderful tech-savvy René Elsner decided to help out and make the Premodern stream his own baby. With the support of the generous Czech Premodern team, who supplied René with all the streaming material he needed to create an awesome streaming experience for everyone. René put a lot of work into this, which deserves a big round of applause from everyone!
Without him, there wouldn’t have been a Premodern stream. Thanks a lot, René!

More InformationRules are Rules
Since the Lions of Austria are a very serious bunch, they know that fun also needs boundaries! That’s why they got supported by Christian Gawrilowicz as our professional head judge and teller of wonderful stories for the Old School Championship. Christian Marx was the judge for the difficult decisions during the Premodern Championship and did a wonderful job.
On top of that, we had Philipp Eckhardt from Three for One Trading helping out with the judge calls for the Premodern Side Event.
Thanks a lot for keeping everything on time and showing us how to play our cards correctly!

Need Cards? No Problem!
Our very own Mutsch (yes, the star from our Instagram and TikTok reels) accompanied us during the whole event, so anybody who needed to buy cards or wanted to get rid of cards could do so! We had a little 341 booth present with all the staples needed for Premodern, as well as some Old School cards that people might need!
As expected, Lukas did a great job! Well-structured, organized, and calm, he managed the booth both days on Saturday and Sunday.
If you missed buying any cards you wanted during the event, you can still do so here!

Best Photographer in Vienna
Almost every picture you see on this blog is from Mario Pernkopf from Mario Pampel Productions photography. He also did the photography last year for the VIENNAGEDDON, and we couldn’t be happier to have found such a talented and beautiful professional.
Mario has the working power of well… a workhorse. Sorry for the comparison, but he was there the WHOLE TIME from start to finish on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday doing all in his power to cover the VIENNAGEDDON to its fullest. On Sunday, he even played the Premodern Championship and did the pictures! Can you tell?
Mario has covered a lot of events for us so far, from smaller tournaments at our store to international events like the MagicCon Amsterdam, to bigger local tournaments in Vienna!
Thanks a lot for those wonderful photos, Mario!
Prizes, Prizes, Prizes
The VIENNAGEDDON 2026 has been PACKED with prizes! Now we all know the real prize is the friendships you make along the way, but it’s also really cool to win something! A little appreciation for the good plays you made, so to speak.

Saturday – Old School Championship
On Saturday, May 30th 2026, we officially started the VIENNAGEDDON with our first main event: THE AUSTRIAN OLD SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP! For a lot of people, this was the origin of the VIENNAGEDDON and therefore the “real” main event of the weekend.
A total of 65 players made it through the registration and to their tables! It only took 7 rounds (because of 1 player!) to arrive at the Top 8.

And everyone got their participation card, hope you are happy with your pictures, you drunkards!
The Most Creative Deck
There have been a lot of creative decks this weekend, so we are very happy that the decision wasn’t entirely our own. This year, the most creative deck was thoughtfully picked by none other than Timmy, the Sorcerer! In the end, he decided on a deck that impressed us year after year with the beautiful deck pictures with his dog, Stefan.
THE WINNER OF THE MOST CREATIVE DECK is…
JONATHAN WAIS

Here are some of the most creative decks of this years VIENNAGEDDON!
Who would you have picked?
Best Unpowered Deck
Once again, some people decided to play unpowered for various reasons, mainly to challenge themselves. Old School Magic is too easy with Power Nine in your deck; we all know that! So we are happy to announce that this year, the best unpowered player kicked some real power ass!
And the WINNER FOR BEST UNPOWERED DECK is…
JOHANNES KAPICZA
No Top 8 for you yet, but we can see the potential having made 12. place with an unpowered deck among 65 players! Congratulations, Johannes!

If you are curious what the unpowered decks looked like, here are some more of them:

JIRI CIHAK
After an exciting finale against Filip Milosevsky, the winner was decided: Congratulations, Jiri!
The final was a fantastic game between two old friends! At one point, they even said that it doesn't feel any different from playing against each other in the pub. Jiri could decide the third game for himself, although with a friendship like that, they both went home as winners!

Saturday - Premodern Side Event
On Saturday, May 30th 2026, while the Austrian Old School Championship started at Vinzirast, we held the second event of the day: THE PREMODERN SIDE EVENT
The Premodern Side Event was a great opportunity to warm up your deck. For others, it was a chance to participate in a big Premodern tournament if they couldn't register for the Austrian Championship. A total of 61 players came together to share their love for retro cards and competitive gameplay!

Sunday - Old School Side Event
On Sunday, May 31th 2026, a very small gathering of 4 players came together for the Old School Side Event. Four players is exactly what was needed for a game of Commander, or maybe we should call it Old School Rumble?! Anyhow, they played a multiplayer game of Old School and had a lot of fun!
No pictures, no witnesses, only Old School nonsense!
BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU
For making this an unforgettable and awesome weekend.
Hope we will see you all again next year!
